My cousin bought a butchered xj 650 midnight a while back and I'm working on the wiring for him but I have a question if anyone can help me it would be appreciated. I have one brown wire thicker than all the others (except for the main power supply) in the wiring harness near the fuse box. Can anyone tell me what that goes to since I can not find another wire of the same diameter near this one.

    Thanks

You will need a wiring diagram so you're not chasing your own tail if it's really bad. Is this butchered as in wires have been changed/added or just the original loom hacked as far as you can tell? What does your fuse box look like?

The basic system is 20A (red) carries V to the ignition and then it comes back to the fuse block via a brown wire to be distributed. The Br leaving the fuse 'should' be the signal 10A line but it branches quite a bit-horn, signals, relays, tach, etc. So you can see why you are going to need a diagram. I think there is one on here but there are so many models and hardly a single model is wired exactly like another.

...so another good thing you can do is put your bike info, year, model & anything you know has been done to it, in your signature line to help id it. More info is always good.

I have a workshop manual for the bike but the wiring diagram doesn't show where a different gauge wire is. Just all the wire colors so that's where I'm lost. Where would the heavier gauge brown wire splice to?

There should be another brown wire (smaller gauge) and that thick gauge brown wire goes to that one. Walmart has a smart inline fuse holder (the light indicator goes on when a fuse is blown).

sounds like the big brown wire that comes from the regulator then the fuses where it splits off to feed your lighting and other accessories. search the forums for the simple wiring diagram. That should help in any case of butchery. Good luck, hit me up if need be.

The big gauge brown and smaller gauge brown go the each side of a fuse. Just replaced my fuse box with 4 inline ATC water sealed fuses and notice the two different gauges but that is the way they come from the factory.
