Having rode cruisers and sportbikes, I have always wanted sportbike performance from a cruiser design. I must say, for something built in the 80's I am nothing but impressed from this Maxim-x. Its been a small project, but I finally have it running very well. I feel like at 7k rpm it "opens up" and literally have to hold on. Its just amazing. I assume its normal for the power to come in at 7k?

Now, it seems i have a wobble in the front tire, if i let go of handle bars she wants to wobble, and when i let off the gas it also wobbles.
would low fork oil cause this? it seems very squishy, and not firm. There is some oil residue on the tubes, so i assume a fork seal change is in order?

    Good for you then!

Acceleration you can get out of an X over 6500 RPMs is a very exciting experience in itself, but it is even more pleasant due to the fact the engine does it so smoothly.

Welcome to the world of Xj's. Yes you need some new fork seals if you have oil. Not that hard to do. The wobble could be from out of balance tire or a flat spot it has been setting for a while. That's what happened to mine, new tire problem solved.

You make a good point, it sounds and feels smooth as hell. I am seriously amazed with this 29 year old bike.

Make sure your fork pinch bolts are up to snuff and everything looks square on the front end.

Wobble like that might also come from bad steering stem bearings (since it's most noticable when you let the handle bars go) or just a bad tire balance (as opposed to bad rubber). Chacal's got the goods on the All Balls bearings and seals that are probably the best fit and quality for our bikes.

The XJs have a pretty smooth power band, but they pull plenty hard once you start turning the mill over as stated above.

What is there to look for with the pinch bolts? Never really serviced the forks on a bike..
