The housing itself is held together by a screw in the middle. I ran the stock cable back and used a self tapper to relace the original screw. Ill see if I can get a picture for you. I have hardtailed my bike so mine is a little different.

I was worried the stock cable might bind but surprisingly its been just fine.

there is a thread from a few years ago here the poster used a bicycle shift lever down on the motor

if you can make a longer rod you can move the bracket on the carb hats to the left outer carb and the bracket on the rod on to the outside you can mount a
bicycle shifter lever on the hat bracket with a short cable or linkage running to the rod bracket

I Just recently shortened a cable after watching a you tube video on making a custom cable.
I didn't follow the guys recipe as I don't have bullets lying around and I have flux in a plastic jar.
I like his old-school methods haha, very nice.
    Have a look.
Here is the link... makes you wonder why you didn't do it before once you do it once.

I did use bronze, gas bottle torch and a piece of brass from a computer motherboard stand to make my end.

Definitely above my knowledge but I will research and attempt this. Seems like an excellent way to relocate it where it should be, near the carbs

Makes Choke adjustment while riding on a cold morning a bit more difficult, but I can see the appeal to that location.

Honestly I just want it away from the controls. Lol and most aftermarket set of controls and switches don't include it.

Bike lever is soooo easy. 10$ for the lever. Bolt it right on the bracket that was originally used for the choke cable. Cut the wire and keep only the wire itself and wrap it around the lever. DONE

These things too, mower repair shop. Make a little bracket, mount where you want and cut cable to length.

The FZ600 has the enrichener lever right on the end of the carbs. Anyone trying to eliminate the cable and handlebar lever on the XJ550 should look for the FZ enrichener rod.
I can't see why it wouldn't fit. I see the original poster was referring to the 650 which is another matter.
