Uh oh...snapped the rear axle spindle pinch bolt - Options?

    Misread the torque spec and snapped it off...

    Luckily I was able to get the whole thing out without messing up the threads.

    Anybody know if the bolt is anything special? Can I just source something from an auto parts store that has the right thread?

    As a side, today was a first for taking off the wheels. Quite a bit more involved than I thought it would be.

    Bike is an '82 650 Seca.

    I did this too, way under the torque spec. I guess my bolt was old and had become fragile. You're lucky that you were able to extract the rest of the bolt easily -- i had to take a torch, a couple EZ outs, a drill, and a week or so to remove mine.

    chacal has replacement pinch bolts. Get one from him, and you'll know for sure that it's the right one.

    I did this too by re-assembling things in the wrong order - the pinch bolt goes last. Anyway, I got a new steel bolt at the hardware store by matching the threads with the old one.

    The fasteners, bolts and screws used in the build are dirt cheap.
    Certainly, ... nothing special.

    Look on Ebay for a Stainless Kit.
    Replace every darn one of them babies with Stainless.

    Thanks for the replies, went with a regular bolt with matching threads from the local store and I'm back on the road. Will add the OEM bolt to an upcoming parts order.

    I think I got REALLY lucky as I only lightly damaged the first few threads of the alloy and was able to fix with a gentle run through with a tap.

    I'm wondering if the OEM bolt was designed to shear at low torque by the engineers to prevent stripping? This being my first bike I'm surprised how low the torque is on the axle pinch bolts!

    The OEM Bolts, Studs, Screws and such are primarily "Soft Steel"

    Highly prone to:

    • Seizure
    • Rounding-off
    • Twisting and Snapping right-off.

    In short, ... they're crap.
