    The petcock on my 1981 XJ650 seems to be leaking, I just bought the petcock rebuild kit and it didn't seem to fix it. I think there is a small hole in the petcock body because I can see it spit a very tiny amount of fuel out while it's idling. I was wondering if my best bet would be to just go with the manual on/off petcock at this point?

    Anyone have any experience with these? I see a lot of people saying they're better then the OEM vacuum petcock.

    I had the same problem and Chacal suggested a remedy that worked. Basically, I needed to lengthen the reach of the plunger and this was done by inserting the end with the o-ring into a small socket and lightly tapping it to slightly bend the metal plate. It worked perfectly. Just be very gentle with the tap since it only take a little to make it work.

    Mine is leaking right where the two square seals meet the petcock, the seals are brand new so I'm assuming is has to be a hole in the actual petcock body. Anyone know if I could remedy this some how?

    You could try doing a repair using alumaweld or similar compound.

    While anything is possible, I doubt there's a hole in the body.

    More likely, the plastic spacer plate is positioned incorrectly or the two diaphragms didn't seat nice and flat and there's a wrinkle somewhere;

    OR you didn't prep the mating surfaces carefully.

    Give this a read: http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=25058.html

    The small-body petcock such as came on the 650 shouldn't need its metal diaphragm plate tweaked.
