how's it going everybody? just picked up an 85' xj700 airhead with 17K miles on it for $1500. tank needed sligh clean and some rust spots buffed off. already took her from Indy up to Michigan (had to turn around because temporary license plate was ripped off by wind). i have done some reading and these bikes seem pretty cool. i have 4 other bikes so i'm not new to them but i am new to the bigger motor club. bike seems to run pretty fast. totally takes off around 6K rpm. only thing wrong i have found with it is that it's a little goofy to ride for me. i'm 6' and i feel like i'm humping the seat.also the tank could be just a little bigger in my opinion. don't get very far on road trips

Welcome. I have an '85 airhead, too. I'm 6'2" and quite comfy on mine. Try moving the handlebars. That might help.
Since you're new here, you'll want to go over your bike and make sure it's safe. Check date codes on tires and brake hoses, check rear brake shoes.
There are folks on this forum who are XJ Gods and can explain anything you need to know.

Welcome to XJBikes! XJ's are great bikes, no lie!

Don't believe the 'guy' and his assurances. During transactions involving money, the salesman almost always lies or at the very least isn't completely honest. Your life can be in the balance so MAKE SURE your new ride is safe.

On these old bikes if the rear brake feels fine most PO's will never touch it, but the members here are well aware that the old shoes can and have delaminated which will lock your rear tire up solid! So check out the rear shoes, your OE front lines were only good for 4 years spec'd, and the tires shouldn't be older than 6 years or have any cracks/checking. Also it's never a bad thing to go through the basic maintenance list and get your ride feeling RIGHT!!

Enjoy the site and your new passion! Glad to have you on board. I changed my bars to give me more room also, big improvement. Post some pics as a great way to introduce your bike as everyone here loves to see a new(old) XJ!
