1980 yamaha maxim xj650. I've read on different sites and in different articles that the crankcase breather tube is supposed to be connected t something, possibly an air box.i have no idea. When problem of oil/gas mixture first originated...the breather tube looks like its supposed to plug into something, but the length of the hose doesn't reach anything, nor is there anything for intro reach. On eBay, there's chrome air box covers available for 1980 yamaha maxim. Begets the idea that I should have an air box

Does that breather tube plug into it? The only thing "air" I see or know of is the four air filters coming out of the carbs

Right. If you have four separate air filters, you have what are known as "pods."

Stock, these bikes had an airbox connected to the carbs by rubber tubes, with a single air filter in it. The breather tube connected to it.

What you can do is to install a "mini-pod" on the breather tube; they make them for exactly that purpose.
