My front caliper on my 83 xj550 has a lot of play in the pin the holes on the caliper it self seem to be oval and the pin isn't centered. I'm not sure if this is normal or how to fix it. I thought about drilling them out and putting bushings in but I don't want to weaken it too much.

mine are loose too and i thought about drilling them back to round also but how would you find the center of a oval hole ?
if you drill it too far one way, it'll still rattle, too far the other and the pin won't go in.
you'd have to use a end mill to drill it so it goes straight, a drill bit will tend to follow the hole that's already there. then the hole would be crooked and you'd be worse off than when you started.
    i just let it rattle

I don't plan on letting it rattle I'll make a shim for it and let that wear out instead. I know permatex makes a liquid shim I might try. I'll figure something out though.

if they rattle you know the pads retracted and aren't dragging :)
i can tell you that regular RTV doesn't last long
