I remember those days. Only bad thing besides waiting for your finger tips to grow back is its hard to get some of the scratches out from the 220 grit. If your gonna be polishing a lot of parts on the bike spend the 50 bucks buy a bench buffer. I chemically strip the clear off the parts and buff. Here is what a total of 20 min start to finish on my 40 year old yamaha looks like. I feel your pain that is how i used to do it

I have bought the bench grinder polish wheels and put them on an old grinder just for polishing so far , not sure what to use to strip but some of my parts are pitted also?

The yellow highlights look really good, any particular reason you didn't go with yellow brakelines?

Cutlass- I use the 220 sparingly and just for the roughest looking spots for the reason you pointed out. Your RD drum looks awesome!

Gunnabuild- I bought the brake lines last year and the intention was to a paint it a shade of red. I decided on yellow at the last minute. Plus it's just different. There are a few member on these board with yellow Maxims and I thought they look sharp. I think the little bit of red goes good with the yellow.

    Great pics,

Bench polisher: Where do you purchased it ? Harbor Freight ?
Stripper: What product did you use to chemically strip it ?
Polisher: What product to polish it ???

Again, looks great & only 20 mins......

Harbor freight has them that is where i got mine. There is 2 different sizes both work fine but you can push harder on the bigger one more power without stalling it. Aircraft stripper takes it right off. If its baked on sometimes takes 2 times. The white rouge that comes with it works well. Its a real learning experience as you go you will learn the proper amounts to use does not take long and you will be a pro. Here is a pic of the fork brace before and after on my x. Only warning i have is wear safety glasses and a dust mask the cotton does fly when buffing lol your gonna get dirty for sure

If your parts are pitted slightly you can get out with a buffer but sometimes you have to sand. Bench grinder works but the arbors on the buffer are much longer so you can move the part without hitting the motor. Nothing worse then just about finishing and the buffer rips it out of your hands and it gets scratched up and you have to start all over. If you click on the link in my signature you can see why i bought a buffer some parts like the wheel were just to big and had to do them by hand

I actually pulled the axle out again so I could paint the washer. Maybe I'm going too far. :)

Oh and obviously these aren't mine, but check these out, not the best shape, but they aren't bad, and although seemingly expensive for what they are being two pieces of 30 year old plastic, the asking price is somewhat "reasonable"

Me? I'd send the seller a message offering 20$ shipped and then go up to 25$ :D

Got the 'faux' screws in place on the tank badges. Yes, I see one's a bit crooked. :x

Here are the side cover emblems. The paint will come off easily enough but they look like crap. Need to think about this one. :?

Sorry about the blurry picture. Low light and a few Moose Drool's apparently. Anyway I put red L.E.D. back lighting in the ATARI.

After trying to hand paint gold with not much success I just left the side badges black. To give them a bit of contrast I dry sanded the letters lightly with 2500 grit. The picture isn't the best but it gives you an idea.
