wiring issues

Hi,
New member and new to xj but already loving it, well...

I have a 82 xj650j which I started working on. It ran crappy, must have been the carbs, I just cleaned them.
Anyway, I decided to unplug all the stuff that was in the headlight bucket and shorten the wires under the seat.
My prob now is that the bike seems to be partially dead. I have no headlight, but do have running and brake light as well as neutral on dash. Trying to start - nothing happens.
I am at a loss at the moment but think it is either the headlight bucket wiring or the wires on the other end of the bike. I did add an led flasher relay (using the methid mentioned on this forum) and unplugged the self cancel. Dont think this is the issue though. Since the issue isrelated to the front of the bike (no starter, no headlight) maybe something went wrong when reconnecting the wires Iin the bucket?

Not sure if you can help but any ideas are welcome.

Do a search for wiring diagrams on this site. It might sound stupid but is Kill switch wired up? Does it not turn over at all? Check fuses?Check starter relay ?

 

Have the wiring diagram but someone must have worked on wires in the past because the color coding is all messed up, like yellow is connected/extended to green etc.
Bike started before I took it apart, at least i know everything was working before i unplugged all connections. no kill switch. And nope, doesn't turn over, it just does nothing when inhit the starter.
There must be a wrong connection or lose cable.
Adding the led flash relay could not have caused it, I assume?

 

Well, I got the bike started. One of the relays was touching the frame or got ground somehow.
Now the only thing not working is the headlight, but that might be an easier fix.

Hey! I have a similar problem and you know what they say about more and merrier and whatnot.
My headlight is not coming on. According to the factory manual, one must test the connectors at wiring to see how many volts they send, and test the terminals to see how many volts they receive.
In my often faulty head, that should be some 5v at the switch, and full 12v at the terminals when the switch is at the ON position.
Sadly, my headlight receives only 5v, and that's when I gave up on the world.

 

Hmmm... one of these days I really have to learn how to measure this stuff and use one of these meters.
Think I am going to cheat for now and run wires from my tail light, which is working, to the headlight. The other one is ground and highbeam.
Never added a pic of my bike, here is one...

 

Nice looking ride. I will have to get the manual out to see the actual schem. and look. 5 vdc sounds like a connection problem. What year is it ?

 

It's a 1982.
Put different tank on to get nicer lines.
The seat is my first attempt at fiber glassing something. Will look for something nicer. The "seat cover" is temporary. I used my son's play mat.

i think a good alternative is foam you can buy at home depot that is ususally used as knee pads when working in the garden it is probably cheaper. but thanks for the site.

no, the exhaust is only wrapped. nothing custom on it.
i only got this bike 5 weeks ago. i modified it a little and put it up for sale again ( want to make quick bucks on it). but for my next "keeper" project I'd definitely get the same bike again. great to work on and not expensive to buy

thought about the same when i saw the original tank on mine but couldn't resist the cafe type
but i can always take everything off again and keep the parts for my own keeper bike in the future

 

having some issues with front brake and getting the fluid back in.
i thought it'd be easy but i am doing something wrong.

i open that little screw on top of the brake caliper, open the reservoir, pour in the fluid and start pumping.
i'd assume that should be it but obviously it isnt. any ideas?
