rear end clunk

    hi I'm new to the site and to xj's. i just recently bought an 82 xj750 runs fine but when i take off sometimes there is a clunking sound, sounds like it is coming from the back. and it don't happen often just every once and a while. any suggestions?

    I will beat every one to the punch on this one. Quite possible the rear brake shoes are at fault. DON'T RIDE UNTIL YOU CHECK. The brake material may have separated from the shoe.
    Pull the wheel off and look. If it is a chain drive the rubber cushions in the sprocket carrier may be missing or bad. You can check at the same time.

    I would agree: brakes shoes delaminating. Old age will do that. Replace and live =).

    If shaft drive, maybe low on rear gear oil, or need replacing. I'd guess the brake shoes first though.

    Happens while your letting the clutch out, maybe you even feel it a little. That's the "middle gear clunk" it's a sort of drive line shock absorber, can' t remember anybody fixing it. Doesn't seem to hurt anything.

    Both my xj750 did the same thing and its not the brakes. I just replaced the rear brakes ( there was not much left of them) not sure what it is but several people have mentioned the same thing. Possibly something in the final drive.




    If you have not checked you rear brakes do so.
