What actually hold proper pressure on valve cover? Is it the pressure against the donut washer or the screw torque into the threades on the head?

You might ask why do you ask? Well, I've replaced all valve cover washers and gaskets. Then set the screw torque to 7 ft.lbs (.2 less than spec'd) and still stripped out two threads. I've got a very expensive torque wrench, so that should not be the issue. Is the 7.2 ft lbs against the rubber donut or against the head where the bolt meets up with the head threads?

Is the gasket out of spec, is the donut washers out of spec, is the manual incorrect?

It's really a pain to fix this, so could someone please explain the physics behing the spec's so that I don't do it again?

Are the donut washers new? Or are they the originals?

the shoulder on the screws tightens on the head to get the 7ft/lbs but the donut is what is actually putting downward pressure on the cover.
maybe the last guy tried to tighten out a leak and damaged the threads

So for now, I tighten until it stops then one extra three finger tap. No more torque wrench on these babies. Sure hope its enough pressure to keep oil from spewing out of every weak area!

Yep, I took Ricks advice and "pinky" tightened them. I got to juuuust tighten, then torqued down with a single pinky finger. No leaks :)
