Haven't posted in a while. 62K miles... question

    Hey folks. Been a while :)

    My 750 Seca is still kicking, with 62K miles on the clock. I'm starting to think about a major overhaul -- my XJ650G is almost ready to roll (needs paint and front brakes), so the Seca can take a break.

    Anyway, from a weekend mechanic's perspective, what would be easier -- cam chain replacement (and all the other stuff I should do while replacing the chain) or swapping the engine? I have a standby 750 Maxim mill with about 5K on the clock, shimmed and ready to go, just needs the clutch basket swapped out.

    When I rebuilt my 650, getting the engine out was a breeze - I tore it down to bare frame, laid it on the side, unbolted the mounts, and lifted the frame off the engine. I suspect it's a bit more involved if the bike doesn't get disassembled to that extent.

    advice would be much appreciated...

    Since you already have it, I'd swap the engine and run that one a while to make sure it is a good one. Then, if I were you (and since I like to work on these things), I would go through the Seca engine thoroughly and get it right.
    Since you'll soon have the other bike done anyway, switch to riding that one and remove the Maxim engine from the Seca and do all of your frame and peripheral inspections and repairs.

    After that, the Seca will be like a new horse to ya!

    Right on.. The more I think about it, the more I want to just go ahead and swap the engines. I have a bad feeling that if I tear into the original unit while it's still in place, I'll open a huge can of worms, and would end up having to swap the engines anyway.

    Dont quote me on this, but i think there are some gearing and tuning differences between the seca and maxim engines.

    I like midnite's idea. Swap the max engine in while you give the seca engine a proper overhaul.

    OR

    Finish your 650 + make sure it's all good. then strip down your 750 for a full disassembly and proper overhaul as needed
