I've had a problem for 5 mos. now, and actually wrote somewhere here a month ago, but when no one responded, I figured I put it in the wrong spot. I think here is where I need to be. Here's my problem:
About every 3-4 days when I go to start my85' XJ700N my starter switch goes dead, and I have to cross the solenoid with a screwdriver to get action--then it will engage and start. I have a new battery. I've also closed up the stop switch by wiring it together so that is not a factor anymore. It might go 10 days even without a problem, then the switch will go dead again. If I leave my cycle alone for 3 days, and not use, then it will again for sure not engage--when being used it usually starts--but not regularly--intermittent, like every 3-4 days like I said, the switch will go dead. I've opened up that switch and cleaned all contact points, and sprayed electric contact fluid there--doesn't last--problem persists. Just what do I do to fix this? Is it carbon build up in my starter itself? What?
Also--another lesser problem, but still a problem I worry about, for it cost me $800 18 mos. ago: f I let this sit 4 days, the switch might engage okay, but the starter turns over and over and won't engage--I worry I might wear out the starter clutch like I did once before. I have the choke fully open--do I need to use the prime on the petcock also? My owners manual I have on disk did not really tell me anything on this--just going by what I remember on another bike I owned once, and can't remember if I used the primer 20 mos. ago when I had this problem, and ended up buying another used engine and swapping it, for the starter clutch on this bike is internal.

Did you replace the starter solenoid? Have you checked the brushes and commutator on the starter motor?
