I have used that oil. I also use Castrol motorcycle oil 10-40W. Autozone puts it on sale for $2.99 from time to time.

I doubt the oil had anything to do with the starter clutch going bad. I'm new to XJ's but I already have learned that some models seem to be susceptible to starter clutch problems. If I'm wrong about this, someone will correct me. Just the sense I got. But I still would think the oil would not be a factor.

You should be using 20W40 or 20W50 if the outside temps aren't below 40 degrees.

10W basis oil is for cold weather. As in, doesn't get above 60.

Remember, a starter that isn't spinning vigorously enough will also appear to be a starter clutch problem.

I was using 20w50 Mobil1, until I found a local source of 20w-40. West Marine sells it under its own brand, for outboard motors.

Brand doesn't matter as much as viscosity and rating. 20W-50, 20W-40, (or even 15W-40) for summer/ with a JASO rating/ certification of MA.

Starter is moving pretty good but anyways I'm going to dump the 15w-40 out and grab some good 20w50 I've notice when it gets really hot outside the bike shifts harder then when cold wonder if the oil is thinned out to much ?

I've switched to a 20W50 mineral oil this weekend. There's certainly a noticable difference. Starts pretty much the same, but it somehow sounds better and seems to ride better, shifting is very smooth as well now.
