    Hey guys,
I was suspicious that my petcock was leaking a little just from gas milage and smell, so i did a rebuild. Now, it is a problem. It is a strong drip when idling, and it continues to drip when the bike is off. Looks to be coming from the diaphram, but cant say for certain. I did take it apart and reassemble it to check for wrinkles in the diaphram and everything looks fine. I didn't change the spring as my kit didn't come with one but the amount its spilling makes me think thats not the issue.

    Any thoughts/suggestions?

    Thanks!
    Ken

There's more to successfully rebuilding a petcock than just replacing parts.

Further, not all petcocks are rebuildable; some are beyond salvation. What to look for is covered in the article as well.

    Have a look: http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=25058.html

Thanks Fitz, Ill admit I half assed it a little bit. It looked fine, but I'll get it all shiney like yours and cross my fingers. You know off hand about what size washer (so i can pick it up while im at work) to drop in there to add spring tension/do you think that would be necessary?

    Cheers,
    Ken

Make sure you check your plastic diaphragm spacer. I just fixed the same issue with my petcock and it was leaking because my plastic spacer had been smashed where it sits into the petcock body. Look at the 2 little dots on each side of it and make sure neither is smashed or flattened.

So i did the thorough clean and shine and made all surfaces flush per fitz's suggestion and now i can say for certain that the gas is coming out of the passage in the diaphram block. Bad diaphram from my rebuild kit?
    PS.
I should have taken pictures fitz, you'd be proud...(if it worked)

Thanks hogfiddles and gungrave, but not the case on either count.

FWIW, I did have one bike that had a leaky petcock......it was supposedly rebuilt before I bought the bike, but it was leaky when I got it. I cleaned it......still leaked. Put a new kit in it, and polished things super-clean inside......still leaked. Put another petcock on, hasn't leaked since.
