    just giving you some sort of response, i'm sure some one who knows better will say something, but it think its more important that you get similar reading between the cylinders then what the actually reading is.

    Yup, the numbers should close to each other.

    Here's what our resident expert, bigfitz52 said regarding this in another thread (also xj700):

    They should all be within 14psi or less of each other;

    and I believe that 100psi is "minimum" for you motor, with 120 being considered "normal."

    Just slightly warm.

    But you still need to get the valve clearances checked and adjusted if they are out of spec. Remember that it's a regular maintenance item not some one-time big deal. Every 5000 miles, after the initial check at 3000 miles.

    If you've got a couple of tight valves you could cause yourself some undue panic here.

    so as i dont have a garage, and its raining and bikes under her cover, i contemplate what i have bought, i was so eager to get back riding, i missed some crucial red flags, #1 being 88.000 kmh, i didnt see the hairline cracks in the front tire (which failed me on safety when i wanted to register it) i missed the brake pointer (which was all the way left), i didnt foresee the bogging out and dying problem, so thats where i started, carbs 101, i adjusted fuel air mix screws,, i found out all 4 were at specs,,2.5 turns out (disapointment), (now what), so i thought carbs were dirty..pulled them off after 3 days of hummin and hawin thinkin im gunna destroy something cause thats usually how things go with me.(im not a bike mechanic) all the time thinkin carb problem, (too rich) sparkys are black and sooty, i take bowls off, spotless, (dissapointment) i cleaned everything anyways, more on the outside checked jets,, i could see light thru both main and idle, still blew carb cleaner thru everything..carbs were spotless blew me away actually..ok so now what? why is it bogging out and hesitating off light?,,i put carbs back on, reset pilot screws once again..she purred like a kitten, then when she got warmer the idle started climbing,,i back idle srcew off, to the point it wont turn anymore and she climbed to 3000 rpm, i rode it around for about 80k otw home she not only was idlin high but then she started missing and bogging again starts great (well as to be expected for a 85) idles perfect vry little bogging when shes cold, checked compression,, as in my last post, and was very impressed, until the compress gauge stripped my spark plug thread, so here i sit, i have a 85 xjmaximn with 88,k on it, that has a stripped sparkplug thread, a idle thats at 3000, (but hey,, she sure looks good sittin there)

    Plus you still have to adjust the valves. (Which should have been done before all the carb-tuning attempts.)

    You can get a HeliCoil kit for the plug hole.
