I've been pondering on this for a LONG time!

What the h... does the "X" in "XJ" mean? I mean "J" is obviously because of the engine orientation resembling the letter in the alphabet. What goes on in the marketing department of Yamaha (or any other motorcycle manufacturer) when naming their series of bikes?

(X)J - shape and orientation of engine resembles the letter "J"
(X)V - shape of engine resembles the letter "V"
    (X)S - no idea
    (X)T - "T" stands for "terrain"?

    And so on...

    Marks the spot?
Pretty sure they don't mean much at all except maybe as a prototype designation originally.
Pretty pointless trying to guess what japanese people were thinking of when the only reason they use english letters is because we don't read kanji.

In Yamaha naming the first letter denotes the bike type

    X is for standard
    F is for sport

Second letter is engine type. J is the transverse inline four, V is the V-twin.
