Well I brought my xj750 back home finally to start figuring out why it won't start. Its an 82 with 16500miles. Pulled carbs to clean them and checked the valves. 6 of the 8 were to tight. 2 went fro 280 too 270 on the shims does this sound right? Going to clean the carbs tomorrow night and get shims on sat. I bet after this she will fire riggt up.

those were some tight valves. I would re-check the clearances after everything is done...

Not surprising at all, at 16K+ if they were never touched. Two sizes means those were uber tight, good catch.

Be sure to roll the motor over by hand a few times once you're finished and re-check as suggested.

As part of your carb cleaning, you'll need to at the very minimum replace the tiny o-rings on the pilot mixture screws and be sure to WET-SET your float levels.

    You're on the right track.

Thanks BigFitz do you know what size those o rings are? I am going to get the shims in the morning and would like to go ahead and pick those up also. The cams look like they are new no signs of wear at all. I am going to have to break down and get a sync tool, but with all of my other projects going I need one.

    They're about the size of a gnat's arse*ole.

Honestly I don't; I haven't done my Hitachis yet and everything in the parts drawer is for Mikunis.

My stock answer would be to check with chacal, unless somebody else can chime in...

The mixture screw O-rings (and the flat washers) are the same between the Miks and the Hitachi carbs. Springs and screws are unique to each model, and the Hitachi's actually have either a coarse- or a fine-threaded mixture screw. The screw hole plugs (anti-tamper plugs) are also different sizes between the two carbs........
