Removing Mufflers

    I was wonder if I have to adjust my carbs if I remove my mufflers all together. I would like the bike to me louder (My inner bad ass).

    Removing the Silencers is going to eliminate a great deal of Back Pressure.

    Consequently, "Inertial Flow" will increase affecting the Mixture.

    You'll likely have to compensate for a Lean Condition.

    Why is it that needing to hear your Bike is such an obsession.

    My first "Bike" was a RollFast.

    We used to clothespin playing cards to the rear fender stay, ruining a perfectly good deck of cards, for faux exhaust fantasies.

    Or, ... if you were really cool ...

    Tie both ends of a partially inflated balloon to the fender stay, fold it into the spokes, ride like hell, give everybody the finger, and pretend to be a Hells Angel.

    I guess that's what now defines me as being old - I want a motorcycle with a noise level that's *respectable* to those around me.

    Now, here in MN, most bikers are on Harleys and without helmets. They wear the mandatory eye protection, but no ear plugs. As someone who's lost a chunk of hearing in one ear, I can tell you it's a PITA, so why set yourself up to hearing loss through wind noise combined with engine noise.

    As I said as I gazed upon my 400 lb neighbor bending over to tend to her azaleas while wearing pea-green hot pants: "Just because it's legal don't make it right."

    Off my soapbox. :)

    Honestly, just don't do it. My bike ran great stock and then I ruined it by drilling holes in my exhaust just to get a little extra noise. Now I'm back to running a new muffler insert and you can really just hear the difference in how it runs.

    I know it's a shame since the bike sounds sooo good with just a baffle, but it's not worth it for the lack of performance. I know my neighbors like me a lot better with the insert installed too

    Just after I got my Maxim, I went on a ride with a bunch of V-twins. Had to start my bike before the rest of them so I knew it was running.

    I agree with 'respectable' sound levels. I followed a guy from work out to lunch the other day, he was on a Harley. I made sure I was in front of him on the way back to work - it was hurting my head being behind him and I was wearing a full faced helmet!

    Don't try to out idiot the village idiots. Wear protection, including hearing, and let the Harley morons be all cool. You'll be able to watch TV when you're old and they'll spend their retirement on hearing aid batteries and paying the fines in low noise zones.

    Then buy a Harley. They are specifically designed motorcycle-shaped noisemakers. A real badass doesn't need to announce that he is a badass, it's kinda self-evident.

    As far as I'm concerned, a badass bike is one that makes power and speed, rather than sound. Being able to corner and stop are kind of important, too.

    Oh, and before it floats up - loud pipes don't save lives. They piss people off and not much else.

    I judge how well tuned the Bike is by being able to arrive at the next light before the other guys.

    It takes a little time and patience, ...
    But, you can make your XJ Bike --> Zip ... Stock.
    Volume doesn't require any finesse.

    Don't be too harsh on the guy who wants to remove the mufflers:) The YICS system for our bikes won't tolerate it though. Major leaning out of the fuel will result! Backpressure is a must for xj's to run properly. As for the loud effect, check with an aftermarket company before you buy and install any new pipes. You will have to rejet the carbs for sure. Good luck loud boy, make it your own ride!!!!!

    Well, I knew that a re jet was needed and I would sacrifice power due to the lack of back pressure. I just wanted a little more growl from the old XJ, but I have decided not to do anything to the bike to alter the noise level cheaply. If I was going to do anything I would get a real exhaust system and engineer it for noise and performance. I agree with the notion that most V-twin riders only ride for the appeal. I tend to call them RUBs (Rich Urban Bikers).

    Hey guys, all good advice for Tony, but you know what? Sometimes you just have to do something (loud bike) just to get it out of your system.
    So, Tony, go ahead and take the mufflers off but do it carefully so that you can put them back on again. The only real concern will be the lean condition as mentioned and that could cause damage to the engine. You can rejet, but you may have to experiment as there is no sure fire way to just have someone say "Yeh, take the mufflers off and go up three sizes on the jets".
    Each bike is different when it comes to modifications, only when the bike is stock can you know what will work and even then you will need to tweak it a bit.

    Tony, here's a suggestion.... re-route the mufflers in order that the gases crash to each other... this will affect the performance on the bike (I don't know how much...) but it will make it a little louder. I didn't do this on my bike it was suggested by my mechanic guy. but I tell you this... on the road above 5000rpm this bike would be hear 300 meters before you show up....
