    Fellow XJers,

After having installed new springs and pressure/friction plates, I'm having problems pulling the clutch handle.
It seems the combination of new plates and springs are too much for the pull of the handle to release the rear wheel.
I've tried a handle from an older XJ with no luck. There just isn't enough to release the rear wheel.
Is there anything else I can try, like removing one friction plate?

Maybe the spline in the cover isn't matched up right with the other half in the clutch so you're not getting the full amount of movement needed, but i'd need it in my hand to tell you how. Spose you've done all the cable adjusting. Have you tried moving the actuating arm back a couple of notches to give more throw?

The new springs in mine are a bit stiffer than the old ones but not too hard on the lever. Could be you got the wrong springs. bigfitz did a write up on clutch plates tho its not 750 specific

I will try to move the actuator back. Thanks for the tip!

Increased tension in the springs (expected if new) would make squeezing that clutch lever a bit more difficult. But the actual travel should be the same which, as Bushy recommended, would cause me to look into the linkage first. Always start with the easy stuff first.

Definately it is the linkage or cable adjustment. Do not even consider running with missing parts!
