    Hello all,

While riding home yesterday on my 82 XJ750, my muffler fell off. The PO put a 4 to 1 exhaust manifold with a nondescript muffler installed on the right side of the bike. I think the bolt came loose holding it to the frame and then the vibrations just backed the muffler off the manifold. The real killer is that somebody ran over the back end of the muffler and flattened it, making it a hunk of metal. I will upload pics later of what's left.

Here's my question: what do I do moving forward? Should I just get a new muffler? If so, any suggestions? I don't want something that's loud, I'd actually prefer to be on the quieter side. Most importantly, if there is a way to improve fuel effiency, I'd like to go after that.

My other option is to try to go back to stock with the dual muffler set up. Any suggestions on how to do that?

Thanks in advance, you guys are awesome

Forgot to mention that one reason for wanting to get away from the existing exhaust manifold is that is routes pipe under the oil drain, making me have to uninstall the manifold whenever I want to change the oil.

I, and others on the site, kept the stock manifold and put harley sportster mufflers on it, there are a few threads talking about that, and several ways to do it.

You could buy a new 4-2 system, but the $$ involved would make this bike a keeper for a long time!

I don't have experience with aftermarket brands for this bike and will defer to the experts on-site.
