Ok so my back brake on my 83 900XJ has squeeled alot but if i ride on it for a little down the road the intensity of the squeel decreases. i took the pads out today and scuffed em with some sand paper and put them back on and no squeel till i used them for a while. i dont know if having ridges in the back rotor would cause it to constantly squeel or what so im looking for an idea to as what would fix this. the front rotors also have the same ridges as well and dont squeel one bit

Not familiar with XJ900 but do they come with anti-squile shims? does the front have the shims? If so, are they in place?

If finances permit, get new discs and metal brake lines - either xj4ever or metalgear.com. Yes i'm suggesting a complete refurb but not just to cure your squeal issue.

yep, that's your anti squeal shim. There is a 'dressing' that can be put on the shims, it's used in auto's too. Ask at a local auto parts store to see if they can get you some help.

Not sure if it will work, but will eliminate a cause if nothing else.

Remove the Sharp edges from the Pads.
    This process is called: "Chamfering"

Sand or Grind the Sharp Right Angles to Rounded-off Edges.
The Pads won't have a sharp edge that drags on the Rotor surface and Squeal.

Bevel or Round-off all the sharp edges on the Pads.

brake lines have already been replaced front and rear. along with master cylinder rebuild. yeah i think it may be almost time for some new discs. just have to try and stick with my front brakes for now till i get the money for it. planning on doing a complete over haul during winter.

well i dont see why the back would squeal and the front wont if they are all set up the same. but ill try and look around for the dressing you speak of

Take Rick's advice and chamfer the pads. Bevel the leading and trailing edges of the pad material.

And rebuild those calipers. If you've already rebuilt the master cylinders and replaced the lines, your new "weak link" is the calipers.

It's also a very good possibility that the brake is dragging slightly causing both rotor and pads to get too hot which can often result in squealing.
