I bought this little gem for 250. I have been on this forum before and had to sell my bike due to moving and I have missed her ever since. I found this on the clist.

The date on the neck is 6/81 and I was told it was a 650. It has the yics. Everywhere I look for an 81 or 82 yamaha 650 it comes up as a shaft drive bike and this one has a chain drive. Thanks for any help

Well, if it's chain, then it's not a 650. The styling doesn't look like a Seca, but there was also a 550 Maxim; we'll need the VIN to know for sure. Does it start with "5K5" by any chance?

Also look on the engine between the 2&3 downpipes -- the engine size should be near where the head bolts onto the cylinder bank.

Just looking at it, it's obviously an xj550 maxim.

There's no airbox there, so you're already going to have issues.............and those are going to be compounded by the fact that there's no mufflers.

Yeah I was mulling over trying to source an airbox or deal with the headache of putting some cool looking pods or something on there. As far as mufflers go i have no idea where to start,,,,maybe some cbr units

Sportster mufflers are really popular around here. YMMV

It appears to have the stock head pipes and the collector box.

This is a good thing; the collector box is a major part of the "magic" as far as the exhaust system goes. You can pretty much use any mufflers that will fit without having to compensate for the exhaust, carb-wise.

If you want it to really scream, find an airbox.

And it's a 550 Maxim, for sure. Likely an '82 despite when it was made.
