Hi all, I think I put this in the wrong forum so sorry for doubling up. I was wondering if anyone had a link to adjusting the clutch on an xj 650. I took the cover of to polish it and then put it back on. It was working fine. I can see the clutch moving (through the oil filler) when you pull the lever but the clutch won't engage. O'h stupid question. Does the engine have to be going for the clutch to operate??? It wasn't.
    Thanks
    Peter

    Nope.

What likely happened is that you don't have the little throwout lever in the correct "starting" position to be able to provide enough throw.

There is a "pip" cast on the cover and the lever has a little "pointer" of sorts on its butt end. When you push the lever forward/upward by hand until it stops, the pointer and the 'pip' should line up.

If not, back the little lever up a spline or two on the shaft until they do.

hi. I just tried to adjust the clutch again. there is no movement in 1st but you can get the wheel to move in the other gears. The motorbike is stationary and is not running. Does this sound right? or should you be able to turn the wheel in 1st gear as well ????
    Thanks
