A Chang Jiang copy of a Ural, which was a copy of the BMW(Barvarian Motor Werks) that the USSR bought from Germany in 1940 during their brief time of peace before Operation Barbarossa.

Thats a odd one. It looks like a Ural or BMW but the engine looks like a 2 stroke. I don' see any valve cover or pushrod tubes and the exhaust port is low on the cylinder. There is a quite a bit of cloth wraped wire that would date it to the 1930s.
    I have no clue.

Those who said Chinese can raise their heads high and proud. :D Talked real briefly with the owner and he said when you take them for a ride over there it's best just to have someone (a 'mechanic') follow you in a truck.

I didn't get a chance to ask how he came into possession of it though. Interesting bike. Like k-moe said, "a lovely copy of a BMW'.

Chiang Jiang. You can buy Chinese Army surplus ones direct from China. I think it's something like $2000 +shipping. They claim they have rebuilt them prior to selling, but I wouldn't count on it.

    And it's not a direct copy of a BMW. K-moe and O-n-B are correct - it's a copy of a copy.

Side valve engines don't have (or need) valve covers, or pushrod tubes. The valves are driven by tappets that are directly over the cam, and the head does double duty. Have you ever taken an L-head lawnmower engine apart?

The arrangement looks similar to this.
