    Been awhile since I've been on here. I found an n model for very inexpensive but it needs the parts listed in the subj, or so says the current owner. Parts 11 and 13 in this fiche
    http://www.cheapcycleparts.com/oem-part ... -x/starter
    Bike is mint with 8k on it. I've never heard of a bike having this sort of issue this 'young' and I've had quite a few s and x models. If I am looking at the fiche right, these parts require splitting the cases.
    Owner states bike won't start sans these parts...There has to be more than this to it. I asked if it was the starter clutch and he said no, but interpretation may be missed here. I'll update on this more when I talk to the current owner. Anywho, IF it is these parts, does anyone have them laying around? I have an x engine in my garage, but I just did an entire top end job on it and I'm not looking at hacking it to bits.

    Probably caused by one of the other myriad of possible issues that cause folks to commonly mis-diagnose a starter clutch;

    like the wrong oil, electrical/connection/solenoid issues or simply a gummed up starter.

    I've got to agree that a mint bike with only 8K miles on it probably does NOT have a starter clutch problem; and how the particular parts you mentioned have become unserviceable beats me. When it DOES fail, it's usually part #6 that splits/cracks; then you would replace parts #7, #8 and #9 with it.

    there would be no way for him to know those parts are bad without splitting the case. i did see a #11 with a small chunk broke off of one of the flanges, but #6 was broke in 3 pieces. replaced #6 and ground #11 smooth and never had anymore problems.
    buy it

    Bingo. Unless they actually split the cases they're guessing.

    It's an 86, which means it's an S, not an N. (the black engine/carbs and the 2 piece seat are good giveaways) The carbs are slightly different than the N (no of those unknown/questionable breather hoses on each carb) These are somewhat rarer than the N.

    I agree with Fitz, next to no way that it's a starter clutch....

    however, on the off chance it would be a starter clutch. I have an N engine in a box that needs a new head gasket put on and some odds + ends if you wouldn't want to split the case.
