Xj model and valve clearances

I´ve been running my xj bike for a few years now. and i´m gotten to the point where i want to get my hands dirty, rather than paying the expencive bills from the mc garage.

I recently messured my valve clearances and got the following:
cylinder Exhaust Inlet
4) 17,8mm - 20,3mm 10,2mm - 12,7mm
3) 15,2mm - 17,8mm 12,7mm - 15,2mm
2) 17,8mm - 20,3mm 12,7mm - 15,2mm
1) 17,8mm - 20,3mm 12,7mm - 15,2mm

My bike has the number 5N9-0009xx, from this i get that i have a xj650J (1982) from Canada. is this correct?

if i assume it is correct that i own a xj650J, the valve clearances needs to be between 0,16mm - 0,20mm for both the inlet and exhaust. correct?

then all of the shims in the inlet side needs to be changed and maybe the one on cynlinder 3 on the exhaust side. correct?

Hope someone can help me with this, since i want to get it right in the first try.

 

No, there's an error in haynes manual for our bikes.

The proper values are: in - 0.11-0.15, ex - 0.16-0.20mm

JG...hard to understand your readings.....list your readings again.....list the exhaust 1-4, & then list your intake 1 thru 4.....

from the new values i get that i need to get some better redings on the exhaust cylinder 3 and inlet cylinder 4 the other ones should be fine.

 

What you NEED to get is a better set of metric feeler gauges so you can measure actual clearances instead of doing the "go-no go" thing. The set you're using may make it hard to determine what shims you'll need. (12.7 ~ 15.2 for example is a bit of a wide "range" as is 10.2 ~ 12.7.)

Let's take inlet 4 for example: at .102mm, it would need one size smaller shim to bring it into spec; but if it's at .127mm it would be in spec already.

 

I finally got a new set of feeler gauges and the time to ger the new mesurements.

Exhaust 1) 0,18 - 0,19 2) 0,19 - 0,20 3) 0,17 - 0,18 4) 0,18 - 0,19
Inlet 1) 0,13 - 0,14 2) 0,14 - 0,15 3) 0,13 - 0,14 4) 0,11 - 0,12

So they should all be ok within spec

so next up is the carbs

 

Stay up on your valve clearances (every 5000 miles) and keep an eye on exhaust #3 and intake #4.
