replacement keys

i need to get extra keys made for my bike, would a place like homedepot or ace hardware have the key blank? or would i need to go to a yamaha dealer? also do i need the number on the key or the number on the underside of the ignition? (is i the same #) was just wondering because there are a few keys on ebay and the list the numbers, but i havent found one that matches yet... has any one goteena key from a dealer, how much did it cost?
i was hoping to find a helmet lock with a spare key that happened to match mine lol, dreaming big i guess.

 

I you have a working key, any locksmith shop should have a blank and be able to make it for less than $5.00. If you only have the key number, it's going to cost $20-$25. I had several made from the one good key I had.

 

The number on the key should match the number on the back of the ignition switch mounting plate....

 

im sure the numbers match, ive just never looked. and now that i know they are the same i dont have too.

 

Something you need to know about Yamaha locks/keys and key blanks: There are 6 different "blanks" designated A~F and they aren't interchangeable. So while you can re-key locks in the same series to match, you can't make them interchange.

As for blanks, Home Depot or Walmart, probably not. The Yamaha shop or any good locksmith should have them, and XJ4Ever does of course. I provided my own and the locksmith I went to was slightly offended that I assumed he wouldn't have them.

$$20-$25 if you only have a number?!?! That would be the LAST time I'd go there! I can get them made for $8 with just a number. Walk in, give them the number, the pull the blank off the wall, punch the number into the computer, put the blank in the computerized machine, key is cut, done.

I also take the cylinder in, too, so they can verify the key blank, and then the cut key.

I got my spares made here in town at Bob's Lock & Key on 41st & Summit. They had the blanks on hand & prices are good. I go to those guys for everything.
