I'm replacing my rear wheel bearings on shaft drive 85 xj700 and replacing the flange on the spacer, but the new flange seems to do nothing. It doesn't touch anything, doesn't hold the spacer centered. Is this replacement just for chain drives, am I doing something wrong? or is this how it's supposed to be.
Should I put the old one back on? I already have the two shaft side bearings in and will have to remove them. Is that ok? I'm soooo confused...

The only thing the keeps the spacer centered, is the axle. Once you have the rim seated on the splines, you stuff the axle through, and it centers everything. Make sure that the thick washer is on the axle before it enters the brake plate, or you'll take the axle back out again when you find that everything is loose.

    So, a re-cap..........

Put the rim/brake assembly back on the punkin and seated on the splines.

start the axle through the right-hand side of the swing-arm
put the washer in place on the axle tip

push the axle through the brake plate, rim, (it automatically centers the spacer inside the rear gear), the punkin, and it comes out the left side.

spin the brake plate around re-attach the brake rod, spring, barrel, and nut,and also re-attach the brake stay arm

Now put the other thick washer over the threaded end of the zxle where it protrudes from the punkin on the left-hand side

    install the castle nut

    install the cotter pin

tighten pinch-bolt on the right-hand side of the swing-arm

double-check everything and go for a ride

Thanks for the response. Can I as though, is the flange actually doing anything? Why does it need to be there.
    Thanks again. Karl

No, I'm doing something wrong. I have the new flange on the spacer, mounted towards the righthand, break side. all three bearings in, used the axel to aline things while assembling. but now I have to use a mallet to get the axil in and out. That cant be right, is it? Something is not straight. Any ideas? Oh man I hope I didn't screw this up...

    Panic not.

Are we talking about this thing?

If so, don't sweat it. All that piece does is support one end of the spacer so it's easier to engage the end of the axle when you install it. Since the flange on the replacement is considerably smaller than on the original part, while it still pretty much does what it's intended to it's almost superfluous. Once the axle is installed it does nothing.

Huh....... that's the first time I've ever seen one of those. Never had one on any of the xj's OR xv's that I've had. Maybe they just wore away! LOL

Or you destroyed it taking it apart and didn't notice (or somebody before you did.)

No, it's truly not needed, especially if you are careful to line everything up as you go along. All it does is support the end of the sleeve on the end the axle slides in from so that the axle can "pick up" the spacer more readily. That's it. Once everything is in place, it doesn't even touch anything.
