I recently obtained a 82 xj750 maxim. This is the gauge cluster with the square headlight. As I am not familar with this gauge cluster, I don't know what the flashing red light I have is for. It seems that it stops flashing if I push the black button next to it, but I can't read the function on my gauge cluster. Could someone that owns the same model or has knowledge of this light tell me what it is and what it indicates.

It's a computerized monitoring system, looks at 7 items and tells you via the big red light flashing and the LCD display that something is wrong. Pushing the button tells the computer to quit flashing, but the red light stays on.
Without the LCD display working it's hard to say which function is reporting the error, or if you have a problem in the computer.

Functions that are monitored are as follows:

STND - side stand is extended
BRK - brake fluid is low
OIL - oil level is low
BATT - battery fluid is low
HEAD - headlight bulb is burned out
TAIL - taillight and/or brake light is burned out
FUEL - fuel level is low

Assuming that the warning lights are the same as Secas, it stops flashing because you're pushing the cancel button. It doesn't mean that the problem has gone away. I would guess that it's the battery warning light. Back when these bikes were produced, Yamaha thought it would be niftly to have a sensor that literaly replaced one of the battery caps. The idea was that it would let you know if your battery was getting low on fluid. Little did they know that a) these bikes would still be around 25 years later and that b) new batteries wouldn't be able to accept the sensor. I've never seen one of these sensors actually still working. There is a way to disable it if you're interested.

Of course, your problem could be something else entirely. Can you tell us which light is flashing? Is there a picture or text on the light? What is its position? (ie 2nd one down, 3rd from the left.)

Oh and then there's the possiblity that the Maxim indicators are different than the Secas but I kind of doubt it.

There is a way to get the battery warning light to quit, It takes a couple of resisters and battery supply. I will see if I can find the website that has that.

There ya go. It is for the turbo but should work for all xj's that had the battery warning light.

I have an extra LCD screen if you need it. If the dash is taken appart the lcd screen comes out in one piece. I have a few extra dash parts left from when I was piecing together the dash for the one I had. Let me know if you want it. The LCD should have the component lit up for the explanation of why the warning light is flashing. If you are seeing this flashing and the side stand is down. That would probably be the reason. Other than that the next item would probably be the Battery probe, like stated above. Take the probe out of the battery, wipe it down and reinsert. Sometime it gets build up on it and causes the light to flash. That was the problem with mine when I got it. Good luck with her.
