I keep hearing that my book is wrong, when I put my carbs back together it will make me fail.

Truth be told, I have a picture of the way they were put in when I tore them down, but I want to know if the PO did it backwards.

The jets as pictured are correct. The labeling is backwards.

This is the correction I have made to my own Haynes manual.

Haynes also shows the valve clearance specs for the Euro 650R as being .16 ~.20mm for both intake and exhaust which is also incorrect. (All "airheads" run .11 ~ .15mm intake except the 1100s.)

Haynes should send every XJ owner a free, corrected copy of the manual to mend the error of their ways. :p

Okay, thank you, it added to my confusion that the exploded diagram on the next page labels pieces 15 and 16 as backwards from the picture here.

Also, I thought the main was bigger and the pilot was smaller...

Thank you all for the corrections!

What would happen if you reversed the jets? Would it still run? I remember in 2008 people saying the book was backwards when I did my carbs. Would the bike run if they were reversed?

if you squirt carb cleaner thru the top air jet with the smaller hole it should come out of the main jet on the bottom.
would it run? not very well

I think people have done this, and the bike idles, but doesn't "RUN" at any descent speed. (from memory)

Faction Arms, for the air jets the pilot is indeed the *larger* one & main is the smaller, guess that's what confused the Haynes boys as it seems counter-intuitive until you fully get your head around how the carbs are working.
