ok guys my first oil change. something went wrong. also something boggles my mind. ( course that dont take much). when I pulled filter cover off, its not just a bolt. attached to it is the hollow shaft that the filter goes around. Also just below the filter is a spring. it looks outta place. Any ideas? On the filter housing there are two triangular notch. I dont see where they line up any thoughts? I installed it once the way it was originally. it leaked all over the floor. I happened to tighten it and one of those triangualr notches broke off. im stumped. Id upload pic but im not sure how. sorry. I added 2 pics as attachments?

Hi. I don't see any pics. I don't have the same bike as you, but the notches are probably just alignment guides. There shoud be a tab somewhere on the engine. There might even be some numbers or letters cast in the housing, they should be upright when the cover is correct. If the tab that broke off is outside the oil seal, you are probably ok. Try again with the alignment, move it around until it feels right before you tighten it. The spring goes outside the filter on mine. First time taking something apart, always take careful notice of how things were. Make notes or take pictures.

(oops, just read your other post about carbs, looks like you already know about taking notes/pics!)
Did your oil filter come with new seals? Did the old one fall out and maybe you didn't see it? There's a big o-ring for the filter cover and a small one for the bolt/shaft on mine. Fram filters come with new seals, some others do not.

Here is a link that shows the parts

Take your time and use this site and you will be fine-there is nothing you can't do to these bikes that hasn't been done by someone here who is willing to help/advise.

Be sure and use motorcycle specific oil-your wet clutch needs it.

This is definately one of those areas where a torque wrench is essential...

get the fins on the housing aligned vertically - perfectly, or the remains of whatever broke off will still interfere with the sealing.

Hi, I too had to look twice and check a manuaul on site,it was shown different on both places that had photo's, there was a v shape marker on the side of mine I aligned it between 2 v's on the motor, to stop it spinning as well I presumed, the longest fin's are at the top and straight up and down,as advised on a XJ thread.

Hope this is going to be correct, what do you think , does it really matter where it sit's as long as the surface seal is ok and at 11ftlb :?:

You could mount the housing diagonally, or any orientation,
especially if the tab is missing - - it'll just look goofy.

Attach a couple button magnets to the filter (metal) to catch all the fine metallic shavings,

Welcome to the site TAZ !!
