Rear-to-front wheel conversion

will the speedometer still work on this?

 

i'd love to have a kit for my 80 xs1100

 

You'd have to compare the overall OD or circumference of the conversion vs. a stock front wheel/tire; as long as that dimension is close, it doesn't matter how you arrive there. I see a speedo drive in the pic above but it isn't properly engaged with the fork ear.

 

Is this still available and does it require machining to install? I have an 83 xj750.

 

Install tip:

If, by chance, you're a bit excited after making all the modifications to the wheel... and end up using a bit of wood you find in your buddy's back-yard to install the bearings...

This is all hypothetical of course. :|

And you hypothetically crush the bajesus out of one of the bearings..

Most auto-parts stores have replacements! Just bring in the, uh, hypothetically-crushed bearing and they can do a cross-search on the p/n.

How much extra weight does that add to the front. I imagine that has a big effect of wheelies. but it does look cool

Can the average joe install the kit or do you need a machine shop?

 

Sybe you can do it yourself...I did it & just used 4" cutter to do it. I won't candy coat it...it does take some time...I didn't have the cash to go to a machinist. I'm really happy with the results, just take your time

This is probably the coolest mod ever... If I could buy a completed wheel I'd be all over it...

 

Personally, I think it makes the front of the bike look heavy and clunky. I prefer the 'skinny and light-weight front' look

 

I agree and can't understand why anyone would want to reduce their overall braking ability while increasing the unsprung weight just for looks.

Well, my 81 has only one rotor anyway and I would think that the fatter/almost baloon would help to control the bike on less than well paved (sand/gravel) areas.

 

that may be, but you are still increasing your unsprung weight. that is never a good thing when it comes to handling.

it exists somewhere, but it's not mine. I found that pic online somewhere. it's a mini bike that looks to have go cart wheels on it.

I've been trying to locate the OP of this thread to see if he still makes./ships the conversion kits. They look great and I was really hoping to throw that rear wheel on the front of my xv750!

For future reference your best bet is to get a rear wheel and brake assembly and a spare front fork (including the triple tree) and axle (unless you want to leave your bike there for a while), then take them to your local machine shop so you can explain to them what you want to do.

One thing that bears consideration is that the tire selection for a 16' wheel is very much less thant that for other sizes, so go tire shopping before you commit.
