Recently rebuilt my 82 xj650. I have good compression and i have decided to run pod air filters . I cleaned and rebuilt all 4 carbs. I ran the bike a few times with the stock jetting and the pod air filters, but it ran very lean and was dificult to start. After a few minuts of riding up and down the street i noticed the motor getting EXTREMLY HOT! So i checked the plugs and sure enough i was right ! Sooo i bought a dynojet kit and Proceeded. to switch out the stock 110 main jets for the 118s in the kit. I replaced the stock needls for the dynojets .... No problem. .......Heres where it all goes down hill. TH FULE MIXTURE SCREWS!!!!! After soking them with penitrating lube for 2 days and tapping them for a few minuts at a shot i could only manage to break one of them loose. broke my screwdriver trying to get the other three with no sucsess. Then i tried putting it back together and fireing it anyway. It did but the revs went through the roof so i shut it down. Then it flooded, and would not start. Next day i swiched out the 118s for the 116s and it fired right up,but again the reves went way up. However i was able to start it multiple times without it flooding. Next i tried the 112s and now i haven't been able to get it started.Have anyone else had any experience simular ? If any one can help me i would realy be greatful. Thanks, Rick

118's from 110's sounds like too big a jump. You are probably sitting correct with the 112's now - as a maximum unless you have an aftermarket exhaust.

To get at those fuel mixture screws check out the FAQ Forum section on carb cleaning and there is a detailed description of how you can bust those screws loose.

Thank you ! .... 116s actualy fired thre best . I have a 4 into 1 with an unrestricted pipe on the end. So it's free flowing. Still doin battle with these screws though. Just in case somthing happens, do you know whare icould get a new set ???.....Worst case . Yamaha sells every part 7 screw for those old carbs EXEPT the fule mixture screws.

    Thanks , Rick

The screws are not available as far as I know. You have 2 options - have a machinist buddy try to make them for you for a case of beer OR get a set of shot carbs from the wreckers and pillage them.
