    That's not a XJ engine. I looks more like a XS midnight special, maybe 79 or 80. The XJ11 never came with a vacuum advance or a black engine.

    I'd bet on an XS as well, the rear drive housing rings a bell as an XS and I've never seen an XJ11 in Oz.

    It's an XS. Look at where the alternator is.

    It is an XS alright, but the XS11 and XJ11 had the alternator on the end of the crank.
    Only the XJ's from 550 to 900 and the FJ's had an alternator mounted behind the cylinders.
    Nowadays of course all in line engines from Yamaha have the alternator behind the cyls.
    You can also tell it's an XS by the vac advance and pick ups on the other end of the crank. XJ's had the vac advance built into the ignitor box and static pick ups.
    Also, there's no YICS on the XS.
