hello all. new member here from Idaho. Just picked up an 82 maxim 650 with 1300 miles and looks like its fresh off the showroom floor! Po installed new tires and battery this summer. I spent last week going over it and making sure everything was ready to ride. Between the wife and I we put 200 miles on it this weekend. i wasnt sure that a 650 would be enough bike for me but was plesantly suprized. its no Vmax but its a fun little ride

    Welcome & glad you've got a nice one :)

When you went over it did you inspect the rear brake shoes? there's a link in my signature below with pictures that can explain better than words why you really need to check/replace them especially with a loved one on board with you. :)

yes was one of the first things i checked! ive been lurking around the forums here for about a month lol so i knew what to check on the old girl. carbs will be next on my to do list. it runs fine just doesnt like starting on the cold mornings. Po told me about this issue and from what i could tell is i think the enrichment circut is partilaly blocked

1300 miles? Yousa, that's awesome (or really scary)! Idaho is a great riding area too.

Good stuff! 8) It's nice when people do their research.

If she's running well otherwise, the cold start issue could well be the enrichment jets (the ones in the float bowl well) as these are the smallest jet on the bike & easily blocked/a real swine to clear properly). I guess you've seen the church of clean & whole 9 yards threads on carb cleaning but if not, they are the two I'd recommend for you to read before starting & to have on your favourites ready for reference during the job.

    IN THE CHURCH OF CLEAN!
    Whole 9 Yards

And yes like mtnbike said, we would like some nice pictures please! 8)

Been a while since I've been on! Since our winter sucked this year I broke the xj out about a month ago. I went through the carbs, checked the valves and replaced the stock fuse block. This weekend its getting an oil and filter change and fresh spark plugs. I'm looking for a decent set of saddle bags and windscreen for it now. Does anyone have any recommendations?

National cycle windscreens are nice, they have a small one called Street shield, if I remember well, not expensive and provides decent protection without ruining the look.

Edit: Slipstreamer also has a similar model, the Spitfire, that I put on my Maxim-X. The size was correct, but I had to add two aluminium brackets of my own to secure the shield to the turnsignals.
