Your looking for the one centered just below the oil filter housing. Sets just underneath it, usually caked with road crud. You might have to clean up a bit before you see it.

Big honkin 19mm bolt - shouldn't be too hard to find, as Robert said.

The second one you've alluded to is the middle-gear drain plug. Finding it the first time is an art all into itself 8O

Luckily, it's not a major concern - it just drains the little bit of oil that sits at the back of the transmission. So unless you really, really, have this all-consuming NEED to get the most oil out of your engine as humanly possible -- you don't really need to worry about draining the middle-gear.

There is no middle gear plug on the 550, it is chain drive. You only have the oil filter housing and the crankcase drain witch is right below the oil filter. 19 mm wrench and watch the hot exhaust.

What does the manuel say to put in the bike as far as amount of oil? I was told 3-3 1/2 quarts.....Can someone check their book if they have a 82 xj550 and shoot me a reply? I would like to get the oil changed asap.

I just fill mine until it is the correct level in the sight glass. I did check the XJ CD for you though.

    Total Oil Amt: 2.9L
At Oil and Filter change: 2.5L
    At Oil Change: 2.2L

A quart is just a hair (not!) more than a litre. It will be roughly 2 quarts 8oz. Fill it to near the top of the sight glass, run it for a minute, turn off and let sit for 5 minutes. Refil to near top of sight glass.

    ****EDIT*****

Checked my facts. I Quart is just a hair less than a litre. 2.5L = 2 Quarts 20 Oz.

When you check the sight glass, make sure the bike is on the centerstand and not on the sidestand

Handy conversion page for working out amounts. Gives quarts as 2.199 though so would then have to do the quarts to Oz conversion 0.199 q = 7.96 fl oz, 2 quarts 7.96 fl oz.

I fill to close enough then slowly add untill the correct level in the sight glass is reached. Centre stand, level surface.
