Recently bought an 82 XJ750 Maxim, had it less than a week and already it's got some issues/personality disorders. It's been an experience all the way around just owning it, as the title I was given by the previous owner had the wrong VIN numbers, which we discovered have been wrong ever since it was initially purchased from the dealership (which, BTW, went out of business in the early 90's).
I test rode it and it ran like the proverbial scalded dog, smooth through all the gears and handled like a champ. I picked it up the next day and rode it home, where the first problems started. The digital check system started flashing indicators and it began to run a little off. Indicators that lit were: Stand, Brake, Tail (light) and fuel (despite a full, fresh tank the PO graciously bought for me). I admit I'm not yet familiar with the bike, though I do love it's"feel", so I'm not sure where I should even begin to look for these sensors ( the obligatory Clymer manual has been ordered, but not yet arrived). Thanks to a previous post, I DID manage to find the Stand sensor and correct it to allow the bike to be ridden, though the indicator still lights. ( The bike would die when put into gear the first day I went to ride it to work).
My attempts to fix the problems so far:
    New tail light bulbs
drained and bled the front brakes (dual caliper disc brakes)
removed and cleaned per previous post the Stand sensor

If anyone can help me troubleshoot these naughty bits I would gratefully appreciate it. I want to love this bike, but it's already acting like a red-headed stepchild, and I can almost hear my old Honda laughing ( I've had my beloved '80 Honda CM400E for 12 years and 44,000 miles now, but I passed it onto my son when I bought this bike)

I would start by checking all your connections and make sure they are clean and tight. I don't know where the fuses are on your bike but if they are the old glass tube fuses under the seat I would replace the fuse box with a new blade fuse holder with a cover. I had some issues related to the fuse box and it seems to be a common problem with these bikes. Don't give up, there's a lot of good and very smart people here and we'll get you fixed up quick.
    Nice looking bike. Real clean

Well, now I need an assist with yet another problem...the local Police have informed me that my speedo is off by almost 15 mph. Speedo said 55, I was clocked at 67, then the officer and I checked my speedo at 50, he clocked me at 64. I'm hoping there's a way to adjust it?
    Thanks heaps again...

Oh, and the "fuel" indicator is no longer lighting up, but everything else still is

Yes there is a way to adjust it. You have to have the correct gears to swap out in the speedo unit to accomplish this. A speedo shop would be your best bet at getting this corrected. Awful nice of the locals to help you trouble shoot your speedo calibration, do they change tires too?
Kid looks happy on a very nice bike, glad to see you keeping it in the family.
As for your electrical problems, did you wash the bike recently with a high pressure washer by chance?
I would also suggest you replace the fuse block with some of the weather tight holders everyone is switching too.

Thanks Fozzie and Robert, appreciate the help!

Tires? I wish...that's also on the list to be done :p As for the local constabulary, I live in a very small town (pop. 2200), it's not like they have much better to do, and they're all Brother Freemason's :)
Yes, my son's pretty happy, I've had that bike literally as long as he can remember, and it makes a great starter bike for him.

It hasn't been washed at all yet, it hasn't needed it. Also, the fuse block has already been replaced with a blade-type block. It's going to a shop later this afternoon for tires, I'm just going to have them look at it to see if I may have overlooked something somewhere with the brakes and taillight.
