What brakes are these?

Hi,

I am looking to order some stainless steel brake lines, but do not know what ones to order. My bike is a 1982 650, but it has a 750 engine and the PO told me it had the may have the 750 brakes, tires, and suspension as well. When I first bought the bike one brake caliper piston was seized and to replace it based on the dimensions of the old one, I required this one:

Does this mean my bike has XS 650 brakes?

Can't see any pictures either. I don't think it would affect the length of the brake lines though anyway, since the banjo fittings have to be in roughly the same place. If you measure the lengths of them all & ask chacal I'm sure he'll know what you need

I don't know why it's not working either, but I followed the link to a page showing your picture, then I clicked on the picture to get it's direct link address. Are we talking 650 Maxim or Seca? What year? My understanding is the Turbo Seca had dual front rotors/brakes, while all XJ650 Maxim bikes had a single front caliper on the left side of the bike (as mine does).

The 650 Maxim caliper mounts with a single bolt acting as a pivot point vertically for the caliper.

Your best bet is to email chacal at "info@xj4ever.com" (remove spaces and parentheses) with the pictures and descriptions you have. He will have pre-made pressure tested brake lines that will be an exact fit.

Howzat? Fitz = IT guy. (And your choice of photo-hosting sites leaves something to be desired.)

They look like 650 Seca (XJ650R) calipers and caliper holders to me; not the rotors. At least not USA-market 650 Seca rotors, they were unslotted.

 

How's this for messed up, Fitz: the ones you posted look broken to me, and mine look fine.

 

THAT'S what I was afraid of: the hosting site is dishing out the pics with a different URL to everyone who views them.

I right-clicked on the actual pics, chose "properties" and used the URLs shown there between "IMG's" so now when I post them, they look fine TO ME. And the URLs it handed you look fine to you.

OP needs to find the actual format to "publicly" link to the pics. Photobucket started doing this same type of screwey stuff lately whereby you can't just "reverse engineer" your own photo links.

Sorry, I tried. They still look like 650 Seca calipers though.

 

I use bb code when I post pics to forums. I find that they format to individual browsers better. they will also be there years from now as long as they are still on my hosting site. I like http://www.flickr.com/ for my pic hosting.

Wow, I didn't mean to cause so many technical difficulties, but thanks everyone for the help. I will get my dimensions and email chacal to see what he thinks. I am still curious why the xs 650 caliper piston was the correct size. Maybe I will haul the calipers off tomorrow to get more pictures because I also need to determine what pads I need.

Many different calipers use the same SIZE piston:

38mm bore (1.50"): XJ550 all, XJ650 Turbo, XJ650RJ, XS650, XJ700 all, XJ750 all except XJ750RL, and XJ1100 front calipers:
Swept area (pi x radius-squared) =
3.14 x .75" x .75" =
3.14 x .5625" =
1.76625 sq. inches

43mm bore (1.69"): XJ650 Maxim/MM, XJ900 all front and rear, XJ1100 rear only:
Swept area (pi x radius-squared) =
3.14 x .845" x .845" =
3.14 x .7140" =
2.24204 sq. inches


Be aware that just because the caliper bore is the same size does NOT mean that the pistons for said calipers are the same. Basically, each individual "style/type" caliper uses it's own unique piston (and other parts, such as pads, slider pins, anti-rattle springs, etc.). For the XJ models, there's 6 different styles/types of calipers:

a) XJ550 all, XJ750 Seca/Euro, and XJ1100 front calipers are the same type.
b) XJ650 Turbo and XJ750 Maxim/MM are the same type.
c) XJ700 and XJ750-X are the same type.
d) XJ650RJ Seca and XS650 are the same type.

e) XJ650 Maxim/MM and XJ1100 rear are the same type.
f) XJ900's all share the same type of caliper.

 

That'll be why the XS listed piston fitted then 8) at least that's cleared up. Chacal, you're font of XJ knowledge without equal! 8O Weird about the pics not showing...

 

Thanks everyone! Chacal, your knowledge about these bikes continues to amaze me. Thanks for clearing up the XS problem. I measured my cables and the left and right cables going to calipers seem to be about 18 inches and cable from master cylinder to the divider is harder to measure, but seems to be about 15 inches. Does this sound about right?

Really? I am glad that I am changing them. I have no idea when they would have last been changed. Any suggestions on what pads to buy?
