I had a cracked pickup so I replaced the whole assembly. There is a tiny bit of play, so I'd like to get it right.

So with the bike running at 1050 RPM idle, the timing light should illuminate the mark closest counterclockwise to the line marked "T", then at 1800 RPM, it should be aligned with the next one (moving counterclockwise), correct? The manual says 10* at 1050, and 12* at 1800.

    Am I correct?

everything you said sounds right but think about this if it's off a bit. has that wimpy little pointer ever been bent?
start with #1 at tdc and see how close the pointer is.

Why should changing a pick up alter the timing ?

the tiny amount of play in the plate is insignificant, i made the hole in my plate into a slot to give me 3deg of advance and it really didn't do anything as far as i could tell. if you get up to 10 or 12 deg advance you can get heat problems.
you can just bolt it on and go since there's nothing to adjust and the advance is in the tci box

The pointer didn't get bent, I just removed the rotor and pickups. There is a slight amount of play on the rotor, and a slight amount on the pickup plate. I messed around with it a bit, and couldn't really see anything change. Maybe 1 degree or so...
