Recently purchased universal rectifier for my xj 750. New one came with plug, plugs in to stock yamaha plug, but wire colors are different. Original yamaha has red(+), black(-), green(brush), brown(brush) 3 white((output).New rec. has 2 green (brushes?), brown (ground position), rest are proper and match Yamaha plug. Do I need be concerned about wire colors, or just plug it in and go? Thanks.

    You need to be concerned.

There is no universal regulator/rectifier (rectifier is only part of the job).

Regulator/Rectifiers are somewhat interchangeable for PERMANENT MAGNET alternators. These are the most common (modern) type.

Unfortunately your XJ uses a field coil, which is controlled by the regulator circuit. The regulator has to be properly matched to operate it properly.

After you get past all that there is still the issue of matching up the various connections.......

Did the new rectifier come with a wiring diagram you can post/link to?

NO diagram with new part. Should have been clearer in first post. Ordered universal regulator/rectifier for Yamaha xj 750. Like I posted before, it plugs into Yamaha plug, but brush wires, and ground wire are different color from Yamaha plug. Thanks for response.

Well, I googled universal rectifier xj750 and one came up for 85 dollars. On the assumption it is a similar part and it is being sold as a direct replacement you should be OK. If you have any concerns, speak to the supplier.

Probably an off sure manufactured device. Most likely European. They use a different color code then in North America.

I'd recommend the correct part. Whatever you save by buying the generic replacement could well be eaten up replacing whatever melts if it's not compatible; plus the cost of the correct part.

Are you even sure that's your problem? Most charging problems on these bikes are due to the alternator needing new brushes or wiring/connection issues.
