I just finished getting my xj650 roadworthy - or so I thought - with great advice from contributors to this forum. Then when I was riding around a little for practice, my friend noticed that the headlight - which comes on when the key is turned on - turns off when the engine starts. What the? Is something wired backwards? Any ideas on what might be wrong?
    thanks,
    Scott

I see from your other topic you have a Maxim (it should be in your signature!).

The headlight should not come on until the engine starts. This is so you don't have the extra draw from the headlight when trying to start it. To do this, Yamaha used a relay. My guess is someone installed the wrong type of relay.

The headlight relay is above the rear of the cylinder head, pretty much centered. You should be able to get to it with the tank on, but first time you might want to pull the tank so you can see what you're doing.

AFTER LOOKING AT FITZ'S POST I REALIZE THAT IS PROBABLY INCORRECT. I'M THINKING I DESCRIBED THE LOCATION OF THE SIDE STAND RELAY. SORRY!

It might also be worth mentioning that there are other relays under the tank too; make sure it's the headlight relay you fiddle with and not the safety cutoff relay.

This will help you positively identify the headlight relay: http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=27543.html

Ah of course! Great! That's an easy fix! I'll replace it with the correct one and if I'm right - this is the last hiccup.

I think this project would've been a lost cause without this forum. Seriously. A hobby is a lot more fun when you can actually succeed! :) Thank you.
