I know the manual says factory adjusted but I bought an 82 maxim 750 which someone had installed Hines 4 into 1 performance exhaust and did away with air box and replaced with pod filters. I think this would affect the factory settings. What are the default settings of the pilot screws? Thanks :(

I've seen 2 1/2 and 3 on this forum. I started at 2 1/2 and used a colortune to get close. Then I adjusted slightly several times and checked the color of the plugs until I got them right. Slightly means the thickness of a dime--I think I got that analogy from Fitz, but it works.

Main jets enlarged. Have not been able to get it running yet, that is the reason for my question about pilot screw adjustment.

Couple of items to regard to starting issues.

Your battery has to be fully charged or dang near it. A drained or weak battery has enough to turn the plant over, but not enough to fire the ignition.

The fuel enrichment circuit (choke) has a small pickup tube in the bowl of the carb that if plugged (normal for 30+ year old carbs) will make the bike very hard to start if at all.

Weak compression in the cylinders. Do a compression test.

On recently acquired bikes it is better to assume that none of the required maintenance or recommissioning has been done. My suggestion is to start with a compression test to verify a viable plant, then remove the carbs and perform a rebuild and church of clean. Check valve clearances and correct to spec, new spark plugs, fresh gas and a fully charged battery. A wee bit of carb cleaner in #1 intake manifold vacuum nipple, replace nipple and give her a crank.

If she doesn't fire up, then on to coils and other ignition tests.

    hope this helps

Have a new fully charged battery, New plugs, Plug Caps, cleaned carbs once, have not checked compression or bench checked float levels. I got the bike from a High School shop class who was going to try to convert it to an electric bike but decided it was too heavy and a final drive unit was an issue. They drained all fluids and one student attempted to clean the carbs. He thought the float bowl drain screw was the air fuel mixture adjustment so who knows what else might have been done. I guess I will start from scrath and check compression and valves.
    Thanks

Don't forget, when starting from cold, with 'choke' don't touch the throttle.
