someone at work came up to me and asked me why my bike was laying down in the parking lot.

i came outside to a busted speedometer, a busted speedo/tach assembly, a bent case guard, a dented headlight bucket, a twisted mirror, scratched up clutch lever and rear blinker.

i picked it up. waited a bit, tried to start it, and the starter wouldn't turn.

i put it in gear and rolled it a bit and got the starter to turn.

she fired up; is a running machine, but she isnt pretty.

    had to tell somebody.

ps. im damn confident it didnt fall over on its own. i shook it around after i put the kickstand down to make sure it was stable. went inside. two hours later i picked it up.

If you park on the sidestand, it doesn't take much of a bump to roll the bike off the stand and over it goes. It has happened to me as well, not my XJ though.

I try to park using my centerstand wherever possible, and lock the handlebar as well.

people like that are the reason we can't have nice things! I watched a young Asian girl in the university district of seattle run into the back of my $60k Mercedes van tonight, three times trying to parallel park. good thing I had my tow hitch in the receiver. otherwise I would have a smashed trailer plug. she was apologetic, I told her she should consider getting some driving lessons.

Years ago I had a Subaru Brat and someone backed in to it and took off. I put a note on the windshield that said "Whoever hit my car, come to my apartment and let me know. Not looking to press charges, just want it fixed." That night there was a knock on my door and when I opened it there was a little scrawny guy standing next to some huge fella. I figured I was in for a fight. The giant guy asked if I owned the Brat, I said yes, and he said the scrawny guy was his little brother and they were there to make things right. They did; it all worked out. Put up a note like Polock said, maybe you'll be surprised and someone will do the right thing and fess up.

That aint good... it happened to my CB750 ages ago but minor damage, what was more annoying was .. same bike same place.. i sometimes use a chain and padlock and some smart rrrse broke off a match in the key hole. I got it out but it took a while of careful fiddling.

In high school, I'd park my 500 on center-stand, and one day it was on it's side. Never found out who pushed it over. It had a full-size front crash bar, so no damage.

I later read that bikes are more stable on side-stand, as the triangle under the bike is larger than the 2 narrow points of the center-stand and the front tire.

Crap, that sucks. The feeling of impotence afterwards is frustrating as hell but I guess it can be sorta zen, too...

That really blows. It's even worse when the guilty party just ditches out. My grandad had a gas tanker back into his Cessna. He built that plane from the ground up and was devastated. Luckily insurance took care of it but you really can't replace the time we put into our projects.

i was able to find a gauge set for $50.00 bucks and i hammered out the headlight bucket and bend back the case guard.

i search the parking lot daily for some sort of evidence.

i also am very safe about parking now.

    thanks everybody.
