Opposite of the nut you'll find two things.

    1. a pinch bolt (needs to be loosened).

    2. A hole in the axle. Put a suitable tool through that hole (drift punch, phillips screwdriver, bar stock) and twist the axle as you tap the loose (but not too loose) axle nut (don't mess up the threads). The axle should come free. If not, just add a good soaking of penetration oil, wait a day, and try again.

I presume you were going to change the bearings anyway? You will be now. The frozen axle appears to have rusted to the inner part of the bearing therefore your hammer blows have been belting the inner race :(

Time to reach for the 50/50 ATF/acetone mixture (if you can get it in there).

$100 is not a bad price. Just mounting and balance at my local shop is $38, if you only bring in the wheel.

Now that the shop has sorted the internal rust issue...for future reference use this ^. Run that axle nut flush with the end of the shaft (it will help prevent damaging the threads). There is also a indent at the end of the shaft. You can use a old Phillips screwdriver (I use a dull scratch all) in that indent to lightly tap the shaft out. Hope this helps.
