I have a bit of a dilema. I have an XJ 650 Maxim here with a serial number starting 5N9 and I'm not sure what numbers to use for the valve shim charts and ordering carb parts. I know it's and 82 and with that prefix it should be basicaly a J sold in Canada.
However when I pulled the carbs apart the Main jets are 112, pilot is 43, Pilot air is 205 with main air of 50. But whats puzzling me is the jet needles are Y-10.
How is this bike classed. When I did the valves I just assumed that it was a J sold in Canada and put everything to .16-.20mm range.
It hasn't run well since it's purchase, but the carbs were filthy so I'm surprised it ran at all.
It has the stock air box and original headers with mac exhausts grafted on so its still a 4-2 config.

The Haynes manual perpetuated the mis-information in regard to valve clearances on the Euro-spec 650s.

All "airheads" should be running their intakes at .11mm ~ .15mm; exhausts at .16mm ~ .20mm.

Carb specs are a different story.

Was there a factory directive that came out around 1980-1981 changing the intake shim values?
