I know this is xj chat only, but i've only ever ridden xj's and i have a chance to pick up a late 80's viagro 750 for $300. It runs and "drives"... it was able to move it self 10 feet before there was 3 ft of snow. So I'm gonna buy it, if anything ill make a gokart after taking the round headlight and chrome guages.
    Any opinions?

I love the Virago platform. I'd jump at one for anything under $500 running or not, they make some amazing looking cafe racers. Unreal find for $300

He told me it was a 650 cc, which they never made, so its either a 535 or a 750, and since it has dual front brakes, i say its a 750. the deal started cause i wanted his chrome guages for my xj750. then the round headlight... then the rest of the bike... and actually im trading a generator for it, which itll cost me about $300 to buy a new generator lol. Ive had a bad winter so this really cheering me up.

My wife's uncle has a '87 535. Last spring he wanted to sell it for $1200, said he would take $900. I offered him $500. He still has it.

Mines an 87, 750. i think it has a bad u-joint. the rear tire will move when the bikes in gear and theres a bit of a clunking sound. but this is my first Vtwin bike, so I'm not 100% on what to expect.

If its an 87 its a 700 same thing as the 750 they all clunk when going in gear if your u joint is going bad it will make a bunch of noise if its real bad will vibrate like crazy going down the road. I like the 87- 700 and 1100 they do not have the dreaded starter problems. I have had an 87 700 89 1100 got rid of them very hard to work on without getting ripped to shreds from all the sharp edges. The only thing i did on my 700 was get rid of those awful hitachi carbs replaced them with 89 mikunis off a 750. yours the carbs have idle jets you cant get to they are not exposed made into the carb bodies so its pot luck if they are clean and a major pain to remove the carbs Y
you have to pull the carb boots off the engine before you can get them off.

Its actually a 1986 xv700. And it was a snapped drive shaft. $20 on ebay for another. The previous owner was prolly burning out judging by the tire. and i've already gone thru and cleaned leaves out of the starter, by the silinoid. so I'm deffinatly gonna find a way to prevent that. Otherwise the bike starts up, all the brakes look good. gas tank is a bit dented, but i dont mind body work.
    Really made my spring.

Originally i just wanted the guages and headlight for my 82 xj750j, but i ended up getting the whole bike, and dont want to change anything... except the drive shaft lol

Starter issues were resolved by then. They were primarily with the 81-83 xv750 and xv920. Some bleed-over into 84, but by 84 1/2 that was all done.

I had quite a number of them, another list member bought the last few that I had and is turning one of them into quite a touring rig.

I still have one, it's a 81 xv750, yup.........has the starter issue-- and it only has about 16k on the bike. I'm in the middle of the starter swap, someday I'll get back to it........in the meantime now have to plan on a carb rebuild, too, as it's been sitting for a few years now.
