It finally warmed up enough (about 40F) to start the bike this week but "Houston.. we have a problem!".

Seemed like it was only firing on #2 and #4 cyclinders at first, picked up #1 after awhile but #3 never got going. All plugs are black and sooty (which I think is to be expected when it's only been started and idled with the choke on until it warms up a few times since winter set in).

Last time I started and let her run for awhile was Xmas eve. I didn't put any Sta-bil in but I only use Premium fuel with no ethanol blend.

All standard maintenance up-to-date and she purred like a kitten in the fall before the weather turned to shit.

Any suggestions on where to start? I'm thinking new plugs & might have to pull the carbs..

Thanks CN - but I had float levels spot on when I rebuilt the carbs in summer 2012 so I can't imagine it would be out of whack.. I suppose I could double check them if I end up pulling the carbs anyway.

I was thinking maybe that float could be stuck on #3 though.?

2012 was 2 years ago. a lot can happen in that time. you can easily check the float levels without removing them from the bike. you might also try first draining the float bowls into a clear glass jar to see what's floating around in there. it would give you more insight into what's going on.

It may be sticky float valves, did you try to tap the float bowls with a screwdriver handle? SOmetimes, it gives them enough of a shake to free them and get them to work properly.

Well, it may not solve your problem, but it is a very simple thing to try first, it doesn't involve any dissasembly.
