I bought a 1980 XJ650, it bumstarts well, but the starter motor will not run, I have powered it directly from a well charged battery and nothing, so now I am trying to find out how to remove the starter without creating a desaster, I do not have any manuals to lead me.
    Thanks a lot

    Ben

    Welcome F4B,

Pick up a manual, blah blah blah :)

It should spin if you connect a battery to it, but like any starter engine shouldn't be spun for any amount of time, esp with no load.

Starter is held on with a couple of bolts, that's really about it, hopefully they come out with little trouble. Just make sure you keep track, where they are two different lengths. You probably just need to give it a good cleaning and perhaps change your brushes. Check this link out, a few pics in there to let you know what you're getting yourself into.

    Hi Marcel
Thanks for your answer, so I presume that at the end of the starter motor, there is a gear that pushes out when the motor si activated, like in a car starter. also when i pull the motor out no parts will come loose.

    Thanks

    Ben

Nope. There is no bendix type movement of the starter shaft. There is a sprag clutch mounted in the starter gear inside the case.

Two bolts at the butt end of the starter, one nut/washer to hold the wire on. Pull the starter out. The ONLY thing that can cause it to be stuck would be the rubber o-ring on the snout of the starter. The gears don't hook together, they just slide together. They only way that they could actually be hooked together would be if something broke and got snagged in there.
